Key distinction from other vibrations: Misfire shaking is tied to engine RPM, not vehicle speed. If the car shakes at 800 RPM idle but smooths out at 2,000 RPM, that’s a misfire pattern. If it shakes at 65 mph but is smooth at idle, that’s more likely a tire or wheel issue.

How to find it: With the engine running, spray carburetor cleaner carefully around intake manifold gaskets, vacuum hoses, and the throttle body. If the idle changes when you hit a spot, you’ve found the leak.

5. Low Compression
If a cylinder has low compression — from worn piston rings, a leaking head gasket, or a damaged valve — it can’t build enough pressure to fire properly. This is a more serious mechanical cause.
How to identify: A compression test is the definitive check. Healthy cylinders typically read 150–200 psi. A cylinder reading significantly lower (more than 15–20% below the others) has a compression problem.

6. Camshaft Position Sensor or Crankshaft Sensor Failure

Step 1 — Read the fault codes Connect an OBD2 scanner and note every code present. A specific cylinder code tells you where to look. Multiple codes together (misfire + lean + O2 sensor) tell a story about the root cause.
Step 2 — Check freeze frame data The freeze frame shows conditions when the code was set — RPM, load, coolant temp. A misfire that only occurs at cold start points toward a fuel delivery or sensor issue. One that only occurs under load points toward compression or injector problems.
Step 3 — Do the coil swap test If you have a single-cylinder code and coil-on-plug ignition, swap the coil to a different cylinder. This is free and takes 5 minutes. It either confirms or rules out the coil immediately.
