What Is the B0010 Code?

The airbag warning light came on. You scanned the car and got B0010.

This code means the airbag control module has detected a fault in the driver side airbag circuit. Something in the electrical path between the module and the airbag itself isn’t right — and because of that, the system can’t guarantee the airbag will fire when it needs to.

That’s what makes B0010 different from most other fault codes. It’s not about fuel economy or emissions. It’s about whether the thing designed to save your life in a crash will actually work.

How Serious Is B0010?

As serious as it gets for a non-emergency fault.

Your car will start and drive perfectly normally. But if you’re in a frontal collision, the airbag may not deploy. That’s the trade-off you’re accepting every day you leave this unrepaired.

Airbag faults also can’t be ignored legally in many places — a vehicle with an active SRS fault may fail a safety inspection, and in an accident, an insurer or court could argue the car wasn’t roadworthy.

How to Diagnose B0010

Step 1 — Read all SRS codes

Connect a scan tool that can read SRS/airbag codes — not all basic OBD2 readers can do this, so make sure yours supports the SRS system. Note every code present, not just B0010. Related codes like a clock spring fault or a secondary airbag circuit code will narrow down the location quickly.

Step 2 — Check the clock spring

The clock spring is the number one suspect for B0010 on most vehicles. It’s located inside the steering column behind the airbag. Symptoms that suggest the clock spring specifically include: the horn not working, cruise control buttons on the wheel failing, or the fault appearing after a steering wheel replacement or airbag removal.

Step 3 — Inspect wiring and connectors

With the battery disconnected and the system discharged (wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting the battery before touching any airbag components), inspect the wiring harness going to the steering wheel airbag. Look for any visible damage, cracking, or signs of heat. Check every connector for corrosion or loose pins.

Step 4 — Test circuit resistance

Using a multimeter, measure resistance across the airbag circuit. The driver airbag squib typically measures between 2–3 ohms depending on the manufacturer — check your service manual for the exact spec. A reading of zero (short circuit) or infinite (open circuit) confirms a wiring fault.

Step 5 — Check for previous accident history

If the car has been in an accident, check whether the airbags deployed and whether they were properly replaced. An incomplete repair after a deployment will keep B0010 coming back regardless of what else you fix.


How to Fix B0010

Replace the clock spring — If the clock spring is the culprit, replacement is straightforward on most vehicles. It’s located behind the steering wheel and airbag, so the airbag needs to come out first — carefully, with the battery disconnected.

Repair wiring or connectors — Damaged wires or corroded connectors need to be repaired or replaced. Use proper automotive connectors — not household wire or electrical tape. The airbag circuit needs to meet specific resistance specs to function correctly.

Replace the airbag module — If the module itself has failed, a replacement is needed. The new module may need programming to the vehicle depending on the make and model.

Complete a proper post-accident repair — If the fault is related to a previous deployment, the full repair needs to be done correctly: new airbag, new module if it deployed, new seatbelt pretensioners if they fired, and a proper reset with the right scan tool.
